Police in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi said on Saturday they arrested a suspected serial child rapist and his alleged accomplice and secured a three-day remand for the main suspect as authorities investigate claims involving multiple victims.
Police said the two men were detained in Surjani Town three days earlier and later handed over to the Tipu Sultan police station, where the case was registered under standard procedures.
East Superintendent of Police for Investigations Muhammad Usman Sadozai said the arrests followed information provided by victims, prompting the formation of a special team. A notification issued on Jan. 6 established a task force comprising senior officers from the relevant police stations to coordinate the investigation.
Suspect remanded
The main suspect, identified as Imran, was brought before the Judicial Magistrate South court by Mahmoodabad police on Saturday.
The court granted a three-day physical remand to allow investigators to question the suspect, who is accused of sexually abusing dozens of children. Police said he was initially detained after local residents apprehended him following an alarm raised by an abducted child.
Investigating Officer Asad told the court that the suspect had confessed during initial questioning to attempting to sexually abuse dozens of children. He added that investigators suspect the man may have killed several children after abusing them, although the exact number of victims remains unclear.
Asad said the investigation requires further questioning and the recording of statements from affected children, and requested a 14-day remand to complete the process.
Police said the suspect was arrested by Tipu Sultan police on charges of child abduction, and that several victims later identified him. Cases have been registered against the suspect at police stations including Mahmoodabad, Tipu Sultan, Korangi Industrial Area, and others.
CM calls arrest ‘major success’
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah issued a statement condemning child abuse and describing the arrests as a “major success”, saying the suspect was involved in the abuse of more than 100 children. He said only seven victims had come forward so far and urged police to locate more victims.
Murad directed the AIG to ensure the case was presented in court with strong evidence and demanded daily progress reports, saying the Sindh government would not tolerate abuse against children.
