The Emirates Literature Foundation, in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), has announced the launch of a new science fiction writing award aimed at inspiring young writers in the UAE.

The MBRSC Short Story Award: New Voices in Sci-Fi is open to participants aged 16 to 30, inviting original short stories in English or Arabic. The initiative aims to provide a platform for emerging talent to showcase their creativity, with submissions ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 words. The deadline for entries is November 16, 2025.

The award was unveiled at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2025, attended by key figures including UAE Minister of State for Youth Affairs Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi, MBRSC Director General Salem AlMarri, Emirates Literature Foundation Founder and Advisor Isobel Abulhoul, and the foundation’s CEO, Ahlam Bolooki.

A panel of judges, including a prominent science fiction author, will evaluate submissions based on originality, creativity, scientific accuracy, and narrative strength. Winners will be announced at the 2026 edition of the festival and will receive a commemorative plaque, access to exclusive creative writing workshops, and the opportunity to have their stories published in an anthology launching in 2027.

Dr. AlNeyadi highlighted the role of science fiction in inspiring technological advancements, stating: “We hope that through this award, young writers will not only imagine the future but also inspire real-world advancements in space exploration and technology."
