U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Ankara on Tuesday for a tense international summit to renew Trump's NATO pressure campaign against European allies.

The American leader criticized European nations over their lack of support during the Iran war while praising Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

How is Trump's NATO pressure campaign affecting transatlantic alliances?

The aggressive campaign strains the transatlantic alliance by publicly calling out key European nations like Germany, France, and Italy for refusing to back American operations in Iran. This ongoing pressure forces member states to rapidly increase their defense spending budgets toward five percent of their gross domestic product to avoid a complete diplomatic fallout.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally greeted the American leader on the tarmac immediately after Air Force One landed in the capital city.

A majestic ceremonial guard of riders on white horses subsequently escorted the presidential motorcade through the empty streets of Ankara toward the palace. Sitting inside the vast presidential complex, Trump highly praised his personal chemistry with the Turkish leader while expressing deep disappointment with other Western nations.

The American president announced that Washington would formally consider selling advanced F-35 fighter jets to Turkey during the upcoming high-level defense negotiations.

The United States previously expelled Ankara from the joint strike fighter program in 2019 following its controversial purchase of a Russian defense system. Erdogan stated that Trump personally provided his word to resolve the lingering sanctions that have severely hampered various Turkish military infrastructure projects.

Trump explained that he was actively testing the loyalty of traditional European allies who previously blocked American forces from using local military bases.

He explicitly criticized Italy, Germany, and France for turning down initial logistics requests at the violent start of the recent Iran conflict. The US leader also risked reopening an old diplomatic wound by reiterating his firm stance that the United States should control Greenland.

Why are European nations increasing their military spending budgets?

NATO allies unveiled defense contracts worth tens of billions of dollars before the summit to prove they are increasing their security spending.

Member countries previously pledged to ramp up their internal military budgets to five percent of national gross domestic product under intense American pressure. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte insisted that European nations are successfully delivering on their promises by taking more responsibility for continental defense.

The stalled international efforts to halt the ongoing war in Ukraine also rose back to the top of the shared summit agenda. Trump spoke directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the gathering and expects to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday afternoon.

The American president expressed optimism regarding a potential diplomatic breakthrough by stating that both European leaders genuinely want to make a deal.

Zelensky urged the alliance to step up emergency assistance for his country's air defense networks due to severe shortages of missile interceptors.

The Ukrainian leader requested that increased Western determination for air protection become one of the primary legal outcomes of the Ankara summit. He also delivered a strong pitch for his nation to join the alliance by describing Ukraine as a source of extraordinary defensive capability.
