The United Arab Emirates warned on Saturday that any disruption to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz could have sweeping consequences for global energy flows and food security, Khaleej Times reported.
Speaking at a UN General Assembly dialogue on commodity markets in New York, UAE diplomat Sarah Al Awadhi said actions attributed to Iran risk destabilizing international trade and intensifying economic pressures on vulnerable countries.
What did the UAE warn about the Strait of Hormuz?
The UAE said any obstruction of the Strait of Hormuz would violate international law and trigger higher shipping and insurance costs, strained supply chains and increased volatility in global commodity markets.
The strait is a critical passage for both energy shipments and essential goods, including agricultural inputs that underpin global food production systems.
How could Hormuz disruption affect global food security?
Al Awadhi, First Secretary at the UAE Permanent Mission to the UN, said recent regional tensions have already affected fertilizer markets. Nitrogen-based fertilizer prices have reportedly risen by up to 80%, adding further strain on countries already facing food security challenges. She described the waterway as essential not just for oil but for the agricultural inputs that feed global supply chains.
She warned against any attempt by a single actor to disrupt global trade routes, and called for stronger safeguards for maritime security and uninterrupted navigation in line with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The UAE delegation also urged broader international cooperation to help developing countries absorb price shocks and strengthen economic resilience amid ongoing global market uncertainty.
