Which UAE universities rose in the 2026 global rankings?

Four UAE universities climbed the CWUR 2026 Global 2000 rankings: Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the University of Sharjah and New York University Abu Dhabi.

Khalifa University ranked highest in the UAE, and all four institutions recorded year-on-year gains driven by stronger research output and sustained national investment in higher education.

How did each UAE university perform in CWUR 2026?

Khalifa University climbed 51 places to 795th globally, placing it among the top 3.8% of universities worldwide. United Arab Emirates University rose 64 places to 958th, while the University of Sharjah advanced 98 positions to 994th. New York University Abu Dhabi improved to 1,063rd globally.

CWUR said the results reflected sustained national investment in higher education and scientific research. The organization analyzed 81 million outcome-based data points across 21,291 universities in 95 countries.

Institutions were evaluated on education, employability, faculty strength and research performance, with research carrying the highest weighting in CWUR's methodology.

What did CWUR's president say about UAE universities?

CWUR President Dr. Nadim Mahassen said the results reflected long-term national priorities in education and innovation. "The extraordinary rise of UAE universities reflects years of financial backing, and the recognition of science and education as valuable public goods," he said.

Mahassen said UAE universities were delivering high-quality education, attracting talent and producing research at scale.

He described the strengthening of the country's higher education system as important to scientific development, innovation and long-term growth. He also said competition in global higher education was increasing, particularly from Asia.

Where do UAE universities rank in the Arab world?

Khalifa University ranked 10th in the Arab world, making it the highest-ranked UAE institution regionally. United Arab Emirates University placed 12th, the University of Sharjah ranked 13th and New York University Abu Dhabi was 18th.

CWUR said Saudi Arabia continued to lead the regional top tier, supported by institutions such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.

Across the Arab world, ranking improvements were driven largely by stronger research output, particularly among Gulf universities investing in science, engineering and technology.

How are U.S. and Chinese universities performing globally?

Harvard University retained the top position for the 15th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. The United States had 313 institutions in the Global 2000 rankings, second only to China.

"The results of this year's rankings show that the United States boasts the top universities in the world," Mahassen said. "However, this dominance is increasingly contested further down the league table, as other universities, particularly from China, are catching up."

China now has 360 universities in the Global 2000 rankings, the highest representation of any country. Tsinghua University ranked 36th globally and led Chinese institutions, with 98% of China's ranked universities improving their positions. In Asia, the University of Tokyo was the highest-ranked institution, followed by Kyoto University and Seoul National University.
