UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will travel to Türkiye on Wednesday for an official state visit at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The visit will include the first meeting of the UAE-Türkiye High-Level Strategic Council, which was established in 2023 to advance bilateral cooperation across priority sectors, Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

Sheikh Mohamed is expected to hold talks with Erdogan at the presidential complex in Ankara. The discussions will cover ways to strengthen the two countries’ strategic partnership and explore expanded collaboration, WAM said.

According to WAM, “the talks will also cover a range of regional and international issues of mutual interest.”

Background on UAE-Türkiye ties

Relations between the UAE and Türkiye began to normalize in 2021 after years of political tension, with both sides exchanging high-level visits and announcing multi-billion-dollar investment agreements, Reuters reported at the time.

In 2022, the two countries signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at increasing non-oil trade and strengthening strategic alignment, according to the UAE Ministry of Economy.

Bilateral non-oil trade between the UAE and Türkiye reached nearly $19 billion in 2023, a 40 per cent increase from the previous year, the UAE’s Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre stated in a March 2024 report.
