Major U.S. television networks staged an unprecedented boycott of presidential TV pool coverage on Monday, protesting President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke White House credentials for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

The joint action left presidential events—including the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new White House helipad and upcoming coverage at the United Nations General Assembly—without live television pool feeds.

Why did major US networks suspend White House pool coverage?

The boycott began after the White House removed CNN from its scheduled role as the primary television pool broadcaster for the day. In response, the five network pool members—ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC—issued a unified statement refusing to substitute pool duties or broadcast designated presidential events without CNN's participation.

"The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting," the networks stated.

Bryan Boughton, Washington bureau chief for Fox News and current chair of the TV press pool, notified newsrooms that designated presidential pool coverage was suspended immediately. According to reporting by The Guardian and the Financial Times, several photojournalism outlets, including Agence France-Presse (AFP), also delayed releasing photographs of White House events in solidarity.

Following the deactivation and confiscation of their reporters' White House passes over the weekend, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a joint federal lawsuit in Washington seeking an emergency temporary restraining order to restore access. The complaint alleges that the selective exclusion violates the First Amendment, arguing that the administration cannot penalize journalists based on editorial stance or critical coverage. A US District Judge scheduled an expedited hearing on the request for Wednesday.

President Trump defended the ban on Truth Social, characterizing critical media outlets as a "cancer" and a national security threat while asserting that the White House was targeting "FAKE NEWS" rather than press freedom. Concurrently, the administration launched "Trump TV," a White House-operated 24/7 streaming channel.

At the same time, Vice President JD Vance argued that barred outlets retain speech rights but are not entitled to White House workspace. The legal standoff comes as President Trump faces historic low approval ratings, ongoing war in the Middle East, and upcoming midterm elections.
