Shortly afterward, the same group of senior Pakistani officials jointly received President Pezeshkian upon his arrival. The coordinated welcome reflected the significance Islamabad placed on the visit.
Why is the Iranian president visiting Pakistan?
Pezeshkian is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking his second trip to the country since taking office. Pakistan's Foreign Office confirmed the visit's timing and purpose. Ahead of the trip, Araghchi had been in Oman with Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf for related diplomatic consultations.
During the visit, Pezeshkian is expected to meet President Zardari and hold formal talks with Prime Minister Sharif. Senior parliamentary figures, including Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, are also scheduled to call on him. These meetings are intended to cover a broad range of bilateral issues.
What will Pakistan and Iran discuss during the visit?
Pakistan's Foreign Office said the visit would allow both sides to review the full scope of bilateral relations and explore cooperation in trade, energy, border security, people to people exchanges and regional connectivity.
It added that talks would also cover ongoing diplomatic engagements following the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, along with regional and international developments of mutual interest. The agenda reflects the breadth of ties between the two neighbors.
How does this visit connect to the US-Iran talks?
The visit comes amid heightened diplomatic activity following direct US-Iran talks held in Switzerland, known as the Lake Lucerne Summit, which helped launch negotiations under the Islamabad MoU signed on June 18.
The 14-point agreement outlines a framework for ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and advancing talks on key issues within 60 days of signing. The Swiss talks, held in Bürgenstock, were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, with Prime Minister Sharif and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir representing Islamabad.
The process also established mechanisms for continued technical-level discussions this week, along with communication channels meant to de-escalate tensions in Lebanon. These channels are intended to ensure the continued flow of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan's role in these talks has placed it at the center of the broader regional diplomatic effort.
What security measures were taken ahead of the visit?
Security was tightened in Islamabad ahead of the Iranian president's arrival, with city authorities temporarily shutting down bus terminals overnight.
The measures reflected the high-profile nature of the visit and the sensitivity of ongoing regional negotiations. Officials have not indicated whether similar restrictions will remain in place for the duration of the trip.
