PSL
The clock is ticking. The moment is less than 48 hours away, when the entire nation will once again come together to celebrate and rejuvenate the country’s most popular sport.
It’s HBL PSL time.
And despite the ongoing chaos, restrictions, and several eleventh-hour changes, the country’s biggest sporting festival is set to roll into action from March 26, culminating with the final on May 3 in Lahore.
Although the circumstances are different for this year’s event, since the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced massive changes amid the ongoing regional political tensions.
The 11th edition of the HBL PSL has the addition of two new teams, while the expansion of matches were also expanded to two new cities, Peshawar and Faisalabad, before the ongoing Iran-US conflict forced the PCB to shift all the 44 matches to Karachi and Lahore.
As a result of the ongoing fuel and logistical crisis, the opening ceremony was also also called off.
But the biggest fatal blow in the back is the decision to organise the matches in Karachi and Lahore behind closed doors. Although Naqvi showed optimism that, as soon as the situation improves, the fans will be allowed to attend the matches in the stadium.
The Expansion
This year’s league will feature eight teams, as compared to six franchises for the past eight editions. Unlike the 34 matches in the previous seasons, this year’s campaign will see 44 matches.
After the number of venues was curtailed, the National Bank Stadium in Karachi and Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host 22 games each.
The eight teams have been divided into two groups of four, each team will be playing twice against the other team in its group and once against each team in the opposite group, resulting in a total of ten league-stage matches per team.
Group 1 features Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, and Peshawar Zalmi, while Group 2 includes Hyderabad Kingsmen, Rawalpindiz, Multan Sultans, and Islamabad United.
As part of PCB’s expansion plan, an auction for two new franchises was held on 8 January 2026, with Hyderabad and Sialkot initially secured the seventh and eighth slots, with ownership going to FKS Group and OZ Developers.
While Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen didn’t renew his deal, prompting the PCB to auction the Multan franchise. It was acquired by Walee Technologies and relocated as Rawalpindiz. Subsequently, Sialkot’s owners sold their team to CD Ventures, who revived the Multan Sultans identity.
Time for digital creativity after late setback?
With fans unable to attend matches, the success of HBL PSL 2026 will rely heavily on TV and digital viewership.
To make the broadcast more accessible, the PCB has introduced a dedicated Urdu commentary feed, catering to audiences in remote and rural areas.
In a major development, the league has secured agreements with multiple platforms worldwide.
ESPN will air matches in Australia and New Zealand, T Sports and Tapmad in Bangladesh, and Cricbuzz, ELIFE, and STARZPLAY in the MENA region.
In the UK, coverage will be on ARY Digital and ARY Plus, while Willow TV will broadcast in the USA and Canada.
The production will feature over 30 cameras and advanced technologies, including DRS with Hawkeye, player tracking, augmented and virtual reality graphics, and Spidercam, providing enhanced coverage in both English and Urdu.
Who are top foreign stars?
Although the IPL also clashes with HBL PSL 2026, the league still features some of the biggest names in T20 cricket.
For the second consecutive season, David Warner will lead the Karachi Kings.
While other top players playing the PSL for the first time from Australia are, Steve Smith, who will play for Multan Sultans after being sold at the price of PKR 14 crore, while Glenn Maxwell has joined Hyderabad Kingsmen with Marnus Labuschagne leading the franchise. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa will represent Karachi Kings.
From New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell will play for Rawalpindiz, while Mark Chapman and Devon Conway are with Islamabad United.
Sri Lanka is represented by Kusal Perera and Maheesh Thikshanaka, both playing for Hyderabad Kingsmen.
South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi will be part of Multan Sultans, and the Bangladeshi pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Nahid Rana will play for Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi, respectively.
The season opener
In the much-awaited season opener, Hyderabad Kingsmen will take on the defending champions Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, with the match starting at 7 pm (PST).
Night conditions in Lahore are expected to be batting-friendly, promising an exciting contest. Fans can look forward to performances from Fakhar Zaman and Sikandar Raza for Lahore, while Maaz Sadaqat, Kusal Perera, and Glenn Maxwell will be key players for Hyderabad Kingsmen.
