Ras Al Khaimah named world's top city for expats ‘to get started abroad’
The emirate ranks first among 53 cities in the Expat Essentials Index
Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the UAE, has secured the top position in InterNations’ 2024 Expat Insider report, making it the world’s leading city for expatriates to start a new life abroad.
The emirate ranked first among 53 cities in the Expat Essentials Index, an integral part of the Expat Insider report.
This index evaluates key criteria for expatriates, including the ease of navigating administrative processes, securing affordable housing, accessing robust digital infrastructure, and integrating without a language barrier.
Ras Al Khaimah’s top ranking underscores its proactive approach to addressing the needs of its expatriate population.
Notably, the survey revealed that 72% of expatriates found it easy to secure housing in Ras Al Khaimah, significantly above the global average of 45%. Additionally, 69% reported no major challenges with local bureaucracy, the housing market, or language barriers—substantially outperforming the global average of 29%.
'Destination of choice for professionals and families'
In addition to its number one position overall, Ras Al Khaimah ranked second globally in the Working Abroad category and fifth for Ease of Settling In. This highlights its growing appeal among expatriate professionals and families seeking a balanced and welcoming environment.
Heba Fatani, director general of Ras Al Khaimah Government Media Office (RAKGMO), said: “This achievement reflects our dedication to creating a safe, welcoming, and thriving community that attracts individuals from all over the world.
Ras Al Khaimah’s unique blend of modern infrastructure, spectacular natural environment, rich history and culture, and thriving business and tourism landscapes contribute to its reputation as a leading destination for expatriates.”
Home to approximately 400,000 residents as of 2023, Ras Al Khaimah boasts a diversified economy, with no single sector accounting for more than 30% of its GDP. It has maintained an ‘A’ range credit rating from Fitch and Standard & Poor’s for 15 consecutive years, reflecting its financial stability and resilience.
The emirate’s natural beauty, including its 64-kilometre coastline, expansive deserts, and the iconic Jebel Jais mountain—home to the world’s longest zipline—adds to its allure. Furthermore, initiatives such as the “Heart of RAK” digital platform, which showcases the emirate's lifestyle offerings, are part of ongoing efforts to enhance its appeal to international residents and businesses.
