The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed Stephen Fleming as England Men's Test head coach. Joe Root will return for a second stint as Test captain. The appointment follows an extensive recruitment process and comes ahead of England's winter tour to South Africa.

Who is Stephen Fleming?

Stephen Fleming spent 18 years coaching Chennai Super Kings, winning five IPL titles and reaching ten finals. He also coached Southern Brave, CSK's affiliated franchises in South Africa and the United States, and Australia's Melbourne Stars. As a player, he represented New Zealand in 111 Tests and remains the country's most successful Test captain.

Why is Joe Root returning as England captain?

Root returns as England's Test captain after previously leading the side in a record 65 Tests and securing 27 wins, the most by any England captain in the format. He also briefly took charge on an interim basis during England's recent home series against New Zealand. The ECB said Fleming was unanimously selected after considering several high-calibre candidates.

When will Fleming take charge of England?

Fleming will officially take charge after the start of England's Test series against Pakistan. Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach for the opening part of that series.

This arrangement gives Fleming time with his family following the end of his long association with Chennai Super Kings, before he arrives in England later in the summer ahead of the South Africa tour.

What has Stephen Fleming said about the role?

Fleming described the appointment as a career highlight. "I'm incredibly excited to be joining England as Test Coach. It's one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed." He added that his focus would be on building on the foundations laid by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, while expressing excitement about working with Root.

What has Joe Root said about working with Fleming?

Root said he was honoured to lead England in Test cricket once again. "It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men's Test captain again." He also welcomed the chance to work alongside Fleming, calling him an exceptional leader with deep knowledge of the game and saying he looked forward to building a winning environment together.
