The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has launched Task Force Iron Gate, a 20-member team based in Tampa, Florida, to disrupt Iran's supply routes across its land borders and the Caspian Sea. Adm. Brad Cooper directed its formation on Nov. 7, aiming to restrict Tehran's access to weapons, technology and revenue.
What is Task Force Iron Gate?
Task Force Iron Gate is a new CENTCOM unit of about 20 civilian and military personnel. It will work with other U.S. agencies to stop advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials and illegal revenue from moving across Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea, complementing the existing naval blockade at sea.
CENTCOM announced the move in a statement posted on X on Saturday. The team will coordinate with other U.S. government agencies as part of the effort.
What did CENTCOM say about the blockade?
"The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our ironclad blockade against Iran at sea," Cooper said. "Strengthening CENTCOM's collaboration with U.S. interagency partners will further constrain Iran's ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories, and replenish their military," he added.

CENTCOM said the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports had prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil in recent months. It said enforcement measures remained in place against all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.
How has Iran responded to the new task force?
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rejected the move, saying the effort to impose an economic blockade would fail. It said the measures would not bring about the collapse of the country's economy.
"The United States will never be able to impose the economic blockade it is pursuing and proposing under various names and through different plans," IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi said, according to the Fars news agency. "The Americans will not achieve their objective of exerting extreme economic pressure to bring about the collapse and disintegration of Iran's economy," he added.

Mohebi also said the United States would be "powerless to block" communication channels between Iran and neighboring countries.
How does the task force fit into the US-Iran war?
The new initiative expands restrictions imposed during the eight-month war between the United States and Iran. Tehran has also restricted passage through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, disrupting a major global energy trade route.
In August, Washington announced what it described as an "economic asphyxiation" campaign aimed at further weakening Iran's already battered economy. The measures followed Tehran's restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian forces have repeatedly targeted vessels attempting to cross without authorization.
