A Chinese-flagged tanker sanctioned by the United States has reportedly transited the Strait of Hormuz despite a US blockade on the key shipping chokepoint, according to shipping data cited by Reuters.

Tracking data from LSEG, MarineTraffic, and Kpler indicates that the vessel Rich Starry became the first to pass through the strait and exit the Gulf since the reported blockade began. The development marks a notable breach of the restrictions placed on maritime movement in the region.

The tanker, along with its owner Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Co. Ltd., is under US sanctions over alleged dealings with Iran. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to vessel data, Rich Starry is a medium-range tanker carrying approximately 250,000 barrels of methanol. It had loaded the cargo at Hamriyah in the United Arab Emirates during its last port call, while crew records indicate it is operated by Chinese nationals.

In a related development, another US-sanctioned vessel, Murlikishan, also entered the strait on Tuesday, according to LSEG data. The empty handysize tanker is expected to load fuel oil in Iraq on April 16, Kpler data shows. Previously known as MKA, the vessel has a history of transporting both Russian and Iranian crude.
