Tales of intrigue: Ex-ambassador Haqqani opens up about Memogate scandal and more
In a recent podcast interview with Nukta Founder and CEO Kamran Khan, Husain Haqqani discusses the details of an infamous scandal
Former Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, has stated that the Memogate scandal was a conspiracy to dismiss sitting government of that time.
in a recent podcast interview with Nukta Founder and CEO Kamran Khan, Haqqani said that the dispute was not with him but the issue was between then-President Asif Ali Zardari and former Chief of Army Staff, General (retd) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
“They wanted to dismiss the government. They thought they could topple the government using this (memo),” he said.
Haqqani revealed that Pasha and Zardari placed a bet before his arrival back to Pakistan. “General Pasha said Husain Haqqani would resign from there (US) and wouldn’t return, while Zardari said that Haqqani would return if I asked him to. So, he asked me to return. I immediately took the next flight and return. I also brought my resignation with me.”
Haqqani said that PPP government didn’t survive because of the Americans but because of Zardari’s capabilities, his various political maneuvers, and his ability to handle political matters. “He (Zardari) managed to save the government and stayed until the very end,” he added.
